Gua sha (pronounced gwa-shah) is an ancient East Asian healing technique that involves scraping the skin with a smooth-edged tool to improve circulation. Rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, it is used to promote the flow of “chi” or energy throughout the body to relieve pain and reduce inflammation.

  • Improved circulation: The scraping motions are thought to promote blood flow, which can lead to a brighter, more radiant complexion.
  • Lymphatic drainage: Gentle strokes can aid in lymphatic drainage, helping to reduce swelling
  • Reduced muscle tension: Massaging with the tool can help relieve tension & break up adhesions in more stubborn areas.
  • Decreased inflammation: According to traditional Chinese medicine, gua sha helps reduce inflammation by releasing stagnant energy. Some scientific studies also support a potential anti-inflammatory effect from a biomedical perspective.

I utilize cupping within a massage session with the style called Running Cupping, where I use silicone cups over massage cream to suction, travel, lift & separate fascial layers.

  • Pain relief: Used to soothe back pain, neck pain, headaches, and shoulder pain.
  • Reduced inflammation: The improved blood flow is believed to help reduce inflammation.
  • Improved blood flow: The suction draws blood to the treated area, which brings nutrients and may assist with healing.
  • Muscle relaxation: Can help decrease muscle tightness and soften scar tissue.
